The Foo Fighters had a very special guest join them onstage during their sold-out show at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, as stand-up comedian Dave Chappelle made a surprise appearance and sang a cover of Radiohead’s “Creep.”
The legendary comic was in New York for the premiere of his documentary Dave Chappelle: This Time This Place at Radio City Music Hall for the 20th annual Tribecca Film Festival. Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl announced that Chappelle would be singing with the band and the crowd immediately went wild as he confidently strutted on stage.
Chappelle is a Grammy winner but his award came from his ability to tell jokes on stage rather than his singing ability. Still, the video of the performance showed him having no confidence issues when it came to singing in front of thousands of people and his voice is so recognizable at this point that it makes you feel like you’re watching a rock star performance.
This was the first full-capacity event at Madison Square Garden since the start of the pandemic, as New York governor Andrew Cuomo recently announced that the state would be lifting essentially all COVID restrictions due to the adult vaccination rate reaching 70 percent. Anyone who attended was required to show proof of vaccination, which did lead to some anti-vaccine protests outside of MSG.
But once everyone was inside, they were no longer required to wear masks, which really makes it looks like a concert that would have been held before the COVID pandemic. Grohl and the band clearly wanted to put on a memorable show in order to mark the return of concerts to one of the most famous venues in the entire world, putting on a nearly three-hour concert that included a three-song encore and a surprise cameo appearance from one of the most beloved stand-up comedians on earth.
